Our school
Ysgol Calon y Dderwen is a new English-medium, Community Primary School, set in five acres of grounds on the banks of the River Severn in the heart of the picturesque market-town of Newtown, Mid-Wales.
The school opened in 2021 following the merger of Ladywell Green Infants School and Hafren Junior School and in September 2025, expanded to include children from Treowen CP School. Education continues to be provided on each of the campuses at Calon y Dderwen and in Treowen. Our school sites are well equipped to serve our children with a fantastic curriculum where supporting the needs of all our children is at the heart of all we do.
Many of our children enter our school via our pre-schools, Derw Bach Children’s Centre, and Treowen (3+) Tots, who both share the facilities.
You will see that Calon y Dderwen is a family school with a proud history and significant potential to continue to build on those well-established and solid foundations of the past. With a fantastic and committed team, there will be even more opportunities for us to develop not only the learning and progress of each child, but also to enhance their enjoyment, excitement and interest in the whole school experience.
We currently use the original Ladywell Green, Hafren and Treowen buildings although there are very exciting plans to develop our site and build a brand new school for our children through the 21st Century Schools programme. The aim is that this new school will be built in time for the September 1st 2027 academic school year.
Our school aim is to encourage children to reach their full potential through a wide range of learning experiences. The teaching of literacy and numeracy will feature prominently in our school and these skills will be developed through wide-ranging activities so they have purpose and meaning.
Children come to us with different needs and as individuals with different levels of ability. We take great care in setting tasks that match a child’s ability, with a focus on pupil wellbeing at the heart of all we do as we seek to help every child reach their true potential in all aspects of school life.
